I feel strongly that given the right tools and opportunity, the vast majority of people can grow to a point where they feel good about their voice and sound. As a vocal instructor, I listen, and hear my students and always begin the lessons with understanding breath control, support and warm up exercises. From there, I move to connecting to their body and comprehension of the mechanics of vocal production and technique. I utilize a classical technique which is applicable to any genre.
Often people are self-conscious about their voice, especially in front of others. Making a student feel welcome from the inception of a lesson is essential to having a student be ready to hear his/her voice. My strengths include establishing a positive relationship with my students at all times so that they do not feel criticized or at risk but excited to do the hard work.
